The building
A department store that became a home
1900 Elm opened in November 1929 as the Titche-Goettinger department store, designed by George Dahl, the architect of Fair Park. The sales floors are gone; what stayed are the things no new building can offer: fifteen-foot columns with ornate crown molding, original casement windows and Art Deco detailing. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Today it holds 129 lofts from 494 to 2,685 square feet, no two exactly alike, each shaped by the bones of the original store.
